The San Leandro City Council on Monday approved its consent calendar, including a staff request to authorize an increase in a traffic‑signal contract to cover an unexpected PG&E requirement to relocate an electrical service meter.
The motion to adopt the consent items was made by Councilmember Aguilar and seconded by Councilmember Viveiros Walton; the vote was 5‑0‑2, with Councilmember Simon and Vice Mayor Bowen absent.
Councilmember Aguilar asked the acting city manager to have the city engineer explain a notable cost increase on Item 5(e). City Engineer Jason Emife said PG&E advised the city during construction that the existing electrical service meter supplying the signal needed relocation and that the staff request reflects the additional design and construction costs to comply with PG&E standards.
“We were informed by PG&E that we would have to relocate the electrical service meter that provides electrical power to the traffic signal, and the cost increase reflects the additional cost to design both the relocation and construct it per PG&E’s standards,” Emife said. Emife acknowledged prior staff turnover may have left a coordination gap and pledged closer coordination with PG&E on future projects.
A member of the public used the consent‑calendar comment period to ask staff to consider using vacated land on Eden Road as a temporary safe‑parking area and raised questions about the East Bay SPCA animal‑welfare services contract (Item 5(f)). The commenter urged the city to evaluate the animal services contract and how officers handle community cats.
Council members voted to approve the consent calendar after the presentation and brief public comment. Staff said they will work with the public commenter to follow up on Eden Road and will provide details about animal‑control procedures if requested.
