Board allows second façade sign at 600 S. 17th St. to aid southbound access

The Zoning Hearing Board on July 20 approved application 2606, allowing a second sign at 600 South 17th Street in the IND (industrial) district. Planning staff said the additional sign is intended to improve wayfinding for visitors and deliveries approaching from the south (Interstate 83) so drivers can safely identify and use the primary vehicular access.
Jeffrey Knight, planning director, told the board the property has a large front elevation and an existing sign at the northern end facing Seventeenth and Brookwood that serves traffic coming from that direction. For traffic coming from the south, however, visitors and delivery drivers might pass the driveway before reaching the building; the applicant therefore requested one additional sign beyond what the IND district permits by right. Knight said the proposed second sign complies with height, size and illumination requirements; the Planning Commission recommended approval.
Ben Orons, representing the sign contractor, and the applicant said the second sign will help "appropriately direct vehicular traffic to the on-site parking for visitors from the South and specifically from Interstate 83," language mirrored in the planning report. A board member asked whether the existing sign would be removed or replaced; staff said the northern sign would be replaced with a conforming sign and the requested new sign would be at the southern frontage. The board voted to approve the request; a written decision will follow within 45 days.
