Summary
The Landmarks Commission agreed to continue development of a story-map walking tour of downtown historical buildings, pursue an audio walking tour in collaboration with local presenters, and add the Center for the Arts as an additional priority building.
The Grass Valley Landmarks Commission reported progress on a multi-format walking tour program that will include an online story map for priority downtown buildings and a complementary audio tour.
Commissioners who previewed Nevada City’s audio walking tour said they appreciated its narrative storytelling and recommended producing an audio component to supplement the existing heritage-home story map. The ad hoc committee (Theresa Poston and another commissioner) said they will reach out to local presenters Lisa and Rose to develop the audio narrative and that Terry will meet with them after he returns to discuss next steps.
Commissioners said they had narrowed the story-map list to 18 priority buildings and asked to add one more: the Center for the Arts, bringing the list to 19. For each property they plan to present both a contemporary photograph and a historical photograph, a brief architectural/history description and one “fun fact” for site engagement. Commissioners asked that text be concise for on-screen and on-banner legibility and that more detailed narratives be posted to the city website.
They described continuing work on a kiosk concept (storyboards at town entry points) while noting concerns about vandalism; commissioners said other cities successfully use kiosks and they believe Grass Valley can too. They also said the commission will include walking-tour events and promotion tied to History Month and related community programs.
Next steps: the ad hoc team and staff will complete current photographs and story-map entries, pursue an audio-tour collaboration with Lisa and Rose, and include the Center for the Arts in the priority list for the story map.
