North Tahoe PUD highlights recreation growth, mussel outreach and beach partnerships

Representatives of the North Tahoe Public Utility District briefed the Placer County Parks Commission on Sept. 18 about recreation and parks work on the North Tahoe side of the lake.
Amanda Conk, the district’s recreation, parks and facility manager, described expanded programming since the PUD hired a recreation manager three years ago and highlighted facilities including Tahoe Vista Recreation Area, North Tahoe Regional Park and multiple beaches the PUD owns or manages under agreement with the county. She said the PUD views itself as an “eyes on the ground” land manager with daily presence that aids quick response to issues.
Conk warned about the threat of golden mussels and urged vigilance, noting that inflatables and paddle equipment can spread mussels when they are stored wet: “...word-of-mouth is the best prevention across all waterways,” she said. She described education and inspection emphasis at boat launches.
Conk summarized recent improvements at North Tahoe Regional Park, including turf fields and a new pickleball/tennis plaza, and a Pam Emmerich Memorial Trailhead extension that will be completed before snowfall and maintained with winter plowing for year-round accessibility. She said the PUD has approximately 10 full-time staff and 6 part-time/full-time-equivalent positions supporting parks and recreation.
The PUD and county are collaborating on a multi-owner beach project (involving the California Tahoe Conservancy and others) to add restrooms, small boat storage and improved access using TOT and other funds.
Conk also distributed wedding and program guides for the North Tahoe Event Center and described weekly coordination meetings on beach conditions and cleanups.
