Town staff updated commissioners on the Sam Donald sidewalk project, reporting that consultant design costs returned higher than earlier estimates.
Staff said the design proposal came in at $60,000 and that construction is still expected to be in the neighborhood of $100,000. "We had been estimating that the contract cost of doing all the work was gonna be somewhere in that 75 to a $100,000 range... That estimate came in at 60 [thousand for design]," staff said.
Town staff said Public Works could perform some preliminary leveling and limited surveying in-house but that an engineering firm would still need to perform full survey, drainage analysis and sign-and-seal the plans. The town will seek formal survey quotes (staff estimated survey work might be $5,000 to $10,000 but noted some past surveys ran higher) and solicit cost guidance from contractors who perform sidewalk construction to better pin down expected total costs.
Commissioners said they supported moving the project forward but wanted staff to confirm likely total cost ranges before authorizing design and construction funds. One commissioner said if total project estimates approach $150,000 the board should consider placing it in the next year’s CIP; another said if the project remains near $100,000 staff should proceed this fiscal year. Staff said it will return to the board with refined cost estimates before committing to expensive design work.
No formal vote was taken; staff described the current step as fact-finding and cost refinement.
