Hearing examiner recommends approval of park playground update and McDonald’s sign modifications for MDC agenda

Three expedited petitions were moved forward: an Indy Parks playground replacement at Canterbury Park and incidental sign/modification requests for a McDonald’s site were recommended for approval and placed on the Sept. 3 MDC agenda.
The hearing examiner read into the record several petitions that staff had classified for expedited consideration because staff recommended approval and there was no known opposition.
Ben Jackson, senior park planner for Indy Parks, described petition 2025 APP 008 to replace the playground at Canterbury Park (5510 Carville Avenue). Jackson said the project will replace a playground from the 1990s, add concrete walkways, rebuild a volleyball court, and add bike racks and seating. Staff supported the request, and the examiner recommended approval and referred the petition to the Metropolitan Development Commission agenda for Sept. 3, 2025.
Jennifer Millican of Ice Miller LLP represented McDonald’s and the landowner regarding 2025 MOD 015 at 2326 Southport Commons Drive. The petitioner sought two adjustments: (1) vehicle-entry signage placement relative to right-of-way and (2) incidental signs (arched driveway element, canopy speaker signage and menu-board signs). Staff had no objection and the examiner recommended approval; the item will also be placed on the Sept. 3 MDC agenda.
Both items were placed on the Sept. 3 MDC agenda for final commission action per MDC procedure.
