Joe Farris, the City of Temple Terrace arborist, urged residents to inspect and maintain trees before storms to reduce hazards during hurricane season. He advised homeowners to look for dead or broken limbs, cracks, decay and hanging limbs that can become flying debris in high winds and to call a licensed tree service with an ISA-certified arborist if they see problems.
Farris warned against over-pruning, saying excessive pruning can weaken a tree and make it more likely to fail during a storm. He also reminded residents that property owners are responsible for cleanup when a tree from their property falls onto another private property. For trees that fall across sidewalks in the public right-of-way or block streets, Farris said the city’s Public Works Streets crew should be contacted to remove debris.
Farris closed by offering to answer questions or concerns from residents about tree safety and maintenance.
