West Milford High School teacher Nicoletta Trucillo was recognized Oct. 14 by the Veterans of Foreign Wars and by board members at the West Milford Township Public School District board workshop for receiving a national VFW teacher/school award.
Trucillo, a high-school teacher, accepted the award at the meeting and the VFW delegation described the national selection process. A VFW speaker, Rudy Haas, recounted submitting Trucillo's nomination and described the packet of materials that advanced to state and national levels. Board members offered congratulations and thanked the VFW for the recognition.
Why it matters: the award is a national-level recognition from the VFW for schools and teachers who promote Americanism, civic responsibility and patriotism; the board marked the honor during its public session.
Details from the presentation
- The VFW's Smart/Major Education award (national-level) recognizes schools for teaching civic duty, flag etiquette and volunteerism. Rudy Haas (VFW commander) described the nomination and judging process and said Trucillo advanced from district to state to national levels.
- Trucillo acknowledged colleagues and administrators and thanked the district for support. She said, "I thank you all for your support because I could not have done it without you and without Mac. You got 1 of my letters of recommendation." The board and community representatives praised her classroom and extracurricular contributions.
- The VFW presented a certificate and commemorative materials; the high school was also recognized as a VFW High School Smart/Major Award winner for its citizenship programming.
Meeting context
The recognition took place early in the meeting as part of the district administration report. Board members paused the agenda to honor Trucillo and to accept remarks from VFW representatives.
Ending
Board members and the VFW delegation encouraged community recognition of the teacher and praised the school's work on civic education and veteran engagement.
