Board reviews internet- and nonresident-student policy revisions; votes set for Oct. 9

Dr. Finney, the superintendent, reviewed three proposed policy revisions the board had previously received and said the items were being tabled for the required 30-day review period and will be voted at the regular meeting on Oct. 9.
Finney said House Bill 268 "requires every school district in the state of Georgia to upgrade their acceptable use policies with regards to Internet safety and most of all social media," and that the administration worked to incorporate the statutory requirements. He credited staff (Jonathan Smith was named) for drafting the language to meet the law’s requirements.
The three items reviewed and tabled for a vote next week are: - Proposed revision to board policy IFBG, Internet acceptable use (required by House Bill 268). - Proposed adoption of exhibit IFBG‑E11, Internet acceptable use — social media (a social-media–specific required component). - Proposed revision to board policy JBCB, nonresident students (the change removes passport as an acceptable proof of residence because passports lack an address).
Finney said the changes must be uploaded to the state if adopted. The board did not vote on these policies at the Oct. 2 meeting; the superintendent said the items would be on the Oct. 9 agenda for action.
