Bonnie Croft fire chief asks board to transfer parcel; board asks staff to prepare proposal

Chief Shannon Smith of Bonnie Croft Volunteer Fire Department asked the White County Board of Education to transfer the portion of school property where the department building sits so the volunteer department can apply for grants and update facilities.
Chief Smith said the fire department has been denied grant applications because the property is not in the department’s name and said the current station, built in 1978, needs a new roof and more space for equipment. “Having that property right there, the 2 acres, I believe that it is on, that would give us an opportunity to advance our department up to today's standards,” Chief Smith said.
Board members acknowledged the request and instructed district leadership to follow a specific process before the board would consider any transfer. The director asked the chief to meet with district staff to identify precisely which portion of the property he is requesting — the chief described the requested area as the portion the department currently mows and maintains, roughly the area around the helipad and adjacent field.
The board advised Chief Smith that the next steps would include the director and staff preparing a formal proposal showing the parcel dimensions and suggested a future agenda item so the board could take formal action. No property conveyance or vote occurred at the meeting; the board said surveys and deeds would proceed only after the board reviews and authorizes the proposed transfer.
Board members asked staff to expedite the process so the department would not face lengthy delays.
