Ally Fay, president of the Churchill County FFA chapter, presented her state-winning Prepared Speaking leadership speech to the Board of Trustees and told trustees she will represent the district at the National FFA Convention later this year.
District staff said Fay won the state contest in Prepared Public Speaking and will compete in the national Prepared Speaking Leadership Development event in Indianapolis on October 25. The district described the event as a 6- to 8-minute speech followed by 3 to 5 questions from judges.
Fay’s speech to the board focused on food safety, farm-to-market producers and the public’s interest in locally sourced foods. In her prepared remarks she cited USDA Economic Research Service figures on growth in direct-to-consumer sales and discussed regulatory barriers faced by small producers. Trustees asked Fay questions after the presentation about affordability, food additives and where to draw regulatory lines between safety and local access; Fay replied that public education and listening to producers and factory workers both inform the balance.
Trustees and staff wished her good luck; the superintendent’s office said the district will help Fay prepare for nationals.
