Smithville R‑II honors students, celebrates new certifications and US News recognition

The Smithville R‑II Board of Education recognized students and staff at its meeting for recent academic and extracurricular achievements, including national and industry recognition and expanded student engagement through the superintendent’s student advisory council.
Addie Galki, a Smithville High School student, was recognized for being selected to perform with the National FFA Band at the 98th National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, scheduled for Oct. 26–Nov. 1. School officials said Addie will represent Smithville FFA, Smithville Warrior Pride band and Smithville High School among about 100 FFA band members nationwide.
The district also accepted a banner from iCEV (industry‑recognized credentials provider) to acknowledge the high school agriculture department’s work earning industry certificates. Staff described the credentials as tangible certifications that help students obtain local employment opportunities; a staff member noted one previous recipient went on to a local employer’s advanced training program after earning the credential.
Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council leaders were introduced. Staff said the council received more than 70 applications this year and selected 32 students from grades 7–12 to serve; the district highlighted that student feedback has informed facility and restroom renovations, locker room improvements and classroom furniture pilots. The board praised the council’s role in carrying student voice into planning decisions.
Administrators also announced Smithville High School was named to U.S. News & World Report’s 2025 list of best high schools. Scott Moore, identified in the meeting as the high‑school principal, said the recognition reflects student outcomes, attendance, test scores and post‑graduation planning. “Our students work extremely hard. Our staff works extremely hard,” Moore said, adding that about 80% of students have a plan at graduation.
Ending: District leaders said they will continue to engage students in design input and celebrate student accomplishments as bond projects and classroom improvements move forward.
