Duchesne County Library reports record participation and higher completion rates in summer reading

At the Sept. 16 meeting staff reported increased participation and completion rates in the library’s summer reading program. The Duchesne branch saw a roughly 6% increase in signups and a record completion rate of about 51%, while Roosevelt’s completion rate rose to about 61% after staff allowed patrons to enter reading time for past days.
Staff said the Roosevelt change was intended to encourage steady reading through the summer rather than having families "front-load" entries early in June. Roosevelt’s signups did not rise dramatically, but completion improved substantially once patrons could log past activity. Staff contrasted current numbers with 2019, when Roosevelt had higher raw signup counts (about 1,500) but a lower completion pattern.
Program sponsors and prizes were credited with supporting participation. Staff thanked local donors for summer prizes, naming Al’s Food Town, Toes in the Sand Drink Company, Gateway Sinclair, Nourish, Thunderbird, Mercantile, and Marion’s Variety. Staff noted Duchesne branch had especially strong local sponsor support.
Anecdotes and follow-up Staff shared several positive patron anecdotes about the program’s impact on children's reading habits and said social activities and prizes help sustain participation. The board asked staff to continue monitoring participation and completion rates and to report back at future meetings.
The library also reported related operational statistics and said nothing in the July–August budget materials required immediate board action. Staff will continue outreach to boost participation toward pre-pandemic levels.
