PITTSBURGH — During public comment at the July 28 Pittsburgh City Council meeting, a long-time Panther Hollow resident urged the council to remove an “illegal skate park” at Panther Hollow Playground, close the skateboarding area, and replace it with two bocce courts to preserve the neighborhood’s Italian heritage.
Carlino Giampolo, who identified his neighborhood as Panther Hollow and said he has submitted testimony previously, told council that the skate park “utterly ignored our heritage” and has altered “the peace, tranquility, and quality of life in our neighborhood.” He described noise from skateboarding as pervasive and said residents have purchased extra locks and experienced harassment near the park.
“If any council member supports her because she is their colleague and friend and ignores the dignity of our residents in our Italian heritage, then that council member must also resign,” Giampolo said, referring to Councilwoman Barbara Warwick.
Giampolo provided a website (pantherhollowplayground.com) and urged residents with relevant backgrounds to contact him. The remarks were made during the public comment period; the council did not take formal action on the skate park during the meeting.
