Lexington County School District Five trustees discussed two separate governance items Aug. 25: a proposal to present two academic years of school calendars for approval, and updates to board meeting policies to reflect a new state law requiring livestreaming and recording of certain meetings.
Miss Taylor presented the proposal to allow the superintendent to present two-year calendar options (2026–27 and 2027–28) to provide families more planning flexibility. Trustees discussed statutory constraints, including a state rule that normally limits the start of classes to after the third Monday in August unless operating under a modified calendar; trustees suggested language clarifying the district’s modified-calendar status and removing hard-coded seasonal language from the policy. Administration will return with amended policy language and a first reading.
On livestreaming, trustees reviewed model policies BE and BEA provided by the School Boards Association and the Department of Education. The new state guidance requires that livestreaming and posting be available for certain board, workshop and committee meetings; recordings must be posted within two days. Trustees debated whether low-tech options such as Google Meet or Facebook Live could satisfy requirements and raised budget and staffing implications for communications and technology teams. Trustees asked administration to present options for implementing livestreaming with cost and staffing implications for future consideration.
