Superintendent warns of enrollment drop; board to consider budget amendment in October

Superintendent Dr. Ross told trustees Aug. 25 the district’s 10-day student count shows a decline from the same point last year and that the district is preparing a budget amendment for October.
"We are down over 600 — I believe 627 students — from 10 days of last year," Dr. Ross said, noting the 10-day count will affect state funding tied to average daily membership and the official 45th-day determination. He said the administration will bring a budget-amendment discussion to the board on Oct. 22 (the superintendent’s calendar referenced Oct. 22) to address potential reductions in state aid to classrooms.
Dr. Ross described the current budget as containing built-in contingencies he called "parachutes" but said the district plans to reevaluate allocations and reassign funds as necessary after the 45th day count. He asked that any proposed increases be linked to local, state and federal compliance requirements during the amendment process.
