District announces virtual town hall on data security incident; FBI to brief families

Lexington County School District Five will host a virtual town hall on Tuesday, Aug. 26, from 6 to 7 p.m. to discuss a recent data security incident, Superintendent Dr. Ross said at the Aug. 25 board meeting.
Dr. Ross said the district will invite subject-matter experts to explain what happened and what families can do to protect themselves. “We have FBI’s joint terrorism task force member and FBI SWAT team member, Jack Jumper, who was joining us, giving us his expertise on what families can do,” Dr. Ross said. He also thanked SLED and local law enforcement for assistance.
Community members who cannot attend live will be able to view a recording on the district website. The district is collecting questions from families online through 9 a.m. Aug. 26 and said it will tailor the town hall to address those questions.
Dr. Ross said law-enforcement partners and the district are continuing investigative work. He urged families to join the virtual meeting for tools and guidance on cybersecurity and said the session will include a call to action for families to better protect personal information.
