Board hears food-service updates, snack plan for athletes and calendar notes for September

Chester County School District staff updated the board on food service, snack distribution for athletes, HVAC projects and upcoming calendar items.
District staff said the food-service team is making changes to improve meal presentation and increase participation. A new high school meal presentation area was on display during a countywide in-service day, and staff said they are pursuing menu and service changes intended to encourage more students to choose school meals.
The board heard that the high school will provide additional snacks — specifically commercially packaged peanut-butter-and-jelly sandwiches (“Uncrustables”) — to athletes after practice to help maintain calories and hydration during busy practice days. Staff said the snacks will be distributed after practices and accommodations will be made for students with allergies.
Separately, staff reported that two large HVAC units were being lifted onto the middle-school roof and that subcontracting parts of the HVAC installation saved the district about $40,000 compared with a turnkey contract. The district said two AC units were awaiting parts and that routine maintenance and installation work is underway.
The board was reminded of two September events: the fall regional meeting Sept. 18 at Haywood High School in Brownsville, and the board’s September meeting scheduled for Sept. 23 at Westchester Elementary at 5 p.m.
No action items tied directly to food-service changes were taken at the meeting; staff said they would continue implementing the adjustments and report back as needed.
