Linn County IT Director Chris Martin updated the commission on infrastructure repairs, a new interface enabling radio-based AVL tracking and successful registration of the county .gov domain.
Chris Martin, Linn County IT director, gave the commission a monthly technology update covering help-desk activity, infrastructure fixes and a new software interface to improve vehicle tracking for public safety.
Year to date, Martin reported 1,088 help-desk tickets opened and 1,072 closed, with 16 currently open. Recent and planned work includes equipment setup for school resource officers, network and phone connectivity at a temporary office in Bunker Hill, replacing water-damaged network feed cables at the fairgrounds, fixing water-damaged security cameras at remote tower sites and completing the Windows 11 upgrade on nearly all county devices.
Martin described a software interface he wrote to convert signals from mesh nodes, JPS locators and radio locator beacons into TAIP format so the county’s AVL (automatic vehicle location) and dispatch systems can track fire trucks without paying cellular fees. He said the solution uses the county’s radio infrastructure at no recurring cellular cost.
Martin also said he completed registration of the county’s .gov domain as a government-only domain and confirmed the address as linncountyks.gov. He proposed standardizing email signature lines across county staff and asked for permission to work on a uniform signature template for the commission to approve. He said Bourbon County invited him to speak at a commission meeting at a high level about Linn County’s radio system; commissioners said they had no objection so long as proprietary details were omitted.
What happens next: Martin will continue infrastructure repairs and return to the commission with any follow-up items. Staff will review the email signature proposal before formal adoption.
