Board recognizes CTE certification earners and appoints student representatives for 2025–26

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — The Charlottesville City School Board on June 5 recognized students who earned career and technical education (CTE) certifications in fields including cosmetology, emergency medical services (EMT) and nurse aide certification, and approved three student representatives for the 2025–26 school year.
Superintendent Dr. Gurley (addressed in the meeting) and division staff called students forward to receive recognition for industry credentials earned through CTE programs. Certified fields named during the presentation included cosmetology (Virginia Cosmetology Examination), emergency medical technician (Virginia Department of Health Office of Emergency Medical Services), and nurse aide (nurse aide certification). Staff acknowledged KTEC leaders and the featured students by name during the recognition.
Student representatives The board accepted a motion to appoint two students to sit on the dais in five-month terms (Aug.–Dec. and Jan.–May) and a third student as an alternate/mentor. The appointed students described in the presentation were Ginger Craighead Way (rising senior, CHS), Solly Schwartzman (rising junior, CHS) and Jayla Turner (alternate/mentor). The students will collaborate with the board mentor Amanda Burns.
Why it matters: CTE certifications provide industry-aligned credentials that can support postsecondary pathways; student representatives provide a regular avenue for student voice on the board dais.
