Mike Presley, representing Sharp Transportation, briefed the council on efforts to sponsor and deliver veterans' wreaths in Mendon as part of Wreaths Across America on Dec. 13.
Presley described how Wreaths Across America began and the mechanics of the program, saying the wreath cost is $17 and can be sponsored online; volunteers and community groups often help raise funds and place wreaths on veterans' graves. Sharp Transportation has sponsored cemeteries in previous years and said the company plans to coordinate wreaths for Mendon and neighboring communities, with a target of roughly 1,400 wreaths if Mendon and North Logan are included.
"The tagline for Wreaths Across America is remember, honor, and teach," Presley said, describing the organization's goal of honoring veterans and engaging schools and volunteers.
Presley said he has been in contact with the cemetery sexton and invited council support at the Dec. 13 ceremony; council members welcomed the proposal and offered to participate and help publicize the effort.
Ending: The company will continue planning with the cemetery sexton, work with local schools and volunteers to raise sponsorships, and return to council with details as the Dec. 13 date approaches.
