Charlottesville Middle School staff outline logistics, safety and temporary spaces ahead of August reopening

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — School staff on June 5 laid out operational details for Charlottesville Middle School ahead of its fall opening in the 2025–26 school year, describing arrival/dismissal logistics, temporary classroom assignments, lunch arrangements and safety measures while portions of the building remain under construction.

Assistant or project lead Mr. Jordan (as introduced in the meeting) presented a slide briefing and multiple photos showing the new construction site, temporary circulation and where different grade-level teams will be located. He said the main entrance will be on the third level, with steps down to the library and a wall separating the new construction from areas still under renovation. Staff will use fobs and a reduced number of keys so that only personnel with a job need access to specific areas.

Key operational notes - Drop-off and buses: Buses will approach from Ninth Street and loop to the gym area for student drop-off; parental drop-off will be on Cherry Avenue. The district will discourage drop-offs at the aquatic center to limit traffic conflicts. - Parking: New permanent parking at the rear of the site will not fully meet staff demand; a nearby paved area (the future outdoor basketball court) will be used for temporary parking. Some staff may continue to use the aquatic center lots. - Lunch and D Building: Because the new construction will not have a finished cafeteria, D Building will be repurposed for breakfast and lunch service using multiple classrooms and serving lines. Two classrooms will be used for serving lines and about 24 students per classroom are expected in that temporary space. - Accessibility concerns: The division flagged a potential ADA-accessibility gap for one temporary entrance route (from Prospect/Forest Hills) and said it will examine the plan before school opens. - Instructional spaces: Some classes (seventh-grade core subjects) will be in permanent locations; others (band, orchestra, chorus) will temporarily use fitness rooms and art studios. The library will be on the second floor and specialized rooms (structured teaching, ISBE team) are assigned on other floors. - Schedule and planning: The school will keep a two-team per grade model, 79-minute core classes, 45-minute electives and a daily 45-minute unencumbered planning period for teachers. The school planned four lunches next year after building-inspector guidance restricted larger single lunch groups.

Community engagement and timeline The division plans orientation and “back to school” events beginning Monday, Aug. 11, to allow families and students to tour the site and run a test of arrival/dismissal procedures. The administration expects to start school operations in the newly occupied areas in August and to demolish D Building after winter break of the following year. Project partners named in the presentation included VMDO and Nielsen; the administration reported ongoing coordination with the city and with the aquatic center and Boys & Girls Club for logistics and shared uses.

Why it matters: The presentation covered both day-to-day routines (busing, lunch, staff parking) that directly affect families and staff and longer-term instructional configuration that will shift again once the final phase of construction completes. The administration asked for patience while the temporary arrangements operate in the first year of occupancy.
