Resident asks Indian Trail to restore glass recycling; staff says curbside glass needs dedicated contract and county drop‑offs remain available

Raven (resident) told the council Indian Trail has never had curbside glass collection and urged the town to add glass recycling for the community’s roughly 13,000 households.
Raven said households produce many glass containers each year and that local glass recycling would help sustainability and reduce imports. Town staff explained why curbside glass collection is not in the current town contract: under the town’s recycling contract glass would need to be collected as a separate, sole‑source stream (so that a recycler could sell the commodity). Adam (town staff) said the town currently pays about four times the per‑ton cost for recycling compared with trash disposal under the existing contract.
Staff noted glass recycling remains available at Union County drop‑off locations (the nearest facility is off Goldmine Road), free to county residents. The town’s contractor and staff said contamination (dirty bottles) can cause entire loads to be rejected; that is one reason many municipalities require glass be collected separately or delivered in a clean dedicated bin.
Council members encouraged residents to use the county drop‑off centers and said the town will continue to explore options and explain costs if residents wish the town to pursue a separate glass recycling program.
No change to collection service was approved at the meeting.
