Resident asks town to add clearer signage to Indian Trail Veterans Memorial; staff outlines cost, timing and next steps

Patrick O’Connor, a self‑described volunteer working on the town’s veterans memorial, urged the council to improve signage and wayfinding so residents and visitors can find the memorial at town hall.

O’Connor said the memorial previously had limited name plaques installed and that new signage in downtown could help people locate the site. He told the council that people frequently don’t know where the memorial is when asked. "We need to honor our veterans," O’Connor said during public comment.

Council staff reported they had installed two new signs near the memorial but that additional signage or a new panel could be added. Adam (town staff) and other staff said a replacement panel for the existing wayfinding structure would cost about $1,200. Staff also warned that a planned reconstruction of Indian Trail Road will require relocation or redesign of wayfinding; signs currently at that corridor may not remain in the same position once the road project is completed.

Council members and staff discussed lower‑cost alternatives, such as a single directional sign or updating the town’s Google/online listing. Council member Chris (unnamed in the transcript) confirmed he had already asked staff to add the memorial to online maps. The council did not allocate funds at the meeting and agreed to table a final decision until sign locations are firm after the road redesign.

Staff noted that the town had removed many town wayfinding signs in a prior effort (leaving three signs on Indian Trail Road) because drivers now commonly use phone navigation; they said any new panels would be coordinated with the broader wayfinding plan when Indian Trail Road reconstruction is scheduled.

Council asked staff to return with cost options and to consider a simple, low‑cost sign to improve visibility in the near term.
