Resident asks Sumter County to add nearly one-mile sidewalk on Cope Road for school and pedestrian safety

Robert Harris, a Sumter County resident, asked the council on July 8 to evaluate installing a sidewalk along approximately 0.9 miles of Cope Road from the intersection of Crays Mill Road to the southern entrance of Twin Lakes Subdivision.
Harris described seeing schoolchildren walking along the roadway, a woman pushing a stroller in the grass and a man in a wheelchair using the center of the road because there was no pedestrian space. "I'm just asking for a sidewalk and safer road," he said, and noted the segment lies on the boundary between two council districts represented by James Byrd and Charles Eaton.
Harris said he recognizes such a project would be extensive and would require funding and construction planning. The council did not announce immediate funding or a timeline during the meeting; staff follow-up was suggested by the county administrator as part of ongoing constituent issues.
