Davis County leaders outline election-day procedures; Commissioner Cross says seat will be open

County election staff told the Davis County Commission on Aug. 12 that polling locations and ballot drop boxes will close at 8 p.m. and that preliminary results are expected shortly after 8 p.m. The county urged voters that any voter in line before 8 p.m. will be allowed to vote.
A county elections official said drop boxes are locked at 8 p.m. and recovered by election workers that night. One polling location had been moved from a library to a city hall because of scheduling; the poll manager at each site is responsible for securing the drop box at closing.
During closing remarks, Commissioner Cross announced he is not planning to run for re-election and said the seat will be open. Cross said the announcement was intended to give prospective candidates time to prepare; he said he believes two terms are sufficient for a commissioner.
Commissioners also discussed public engagement plans: one commissioner said they will hold a town hall the last week of the month focused on transparency and outreach. Commissioners encouraged residents to learn about county-elected positions beyond the commission, including the controller and clerk.
The Board of Health also had its first meeting with new member Dr. Candice Smith, who serves in a volunteer, advisory role on public-health policy, commissioners said.
