The Galveston Landmark Commission on Aug. 4 approved the designation of the Tree Acre House (built 1889) as a Galveston landmark and recommended the property for the City Council's consideration.
Daniel, Landmark Commission staff, described the property at 2928 Avenue K as a 1889 two-story side-hall townhouse notable for a double gallery trimmed with queen and sunburst brackets. Daniel told commissioners the house displays carpentry skills associated with immigrant craftsmen and noted the property was at one point owned by the Galveston Historical Foundation and recently appeared on a local historic-home program. "The Tree Acre House was built in 1889," Daniel said in his staff report.
Staff reported 33 public notices were sent and one response was returned in favor. The property lies outside the local historic district and would be eligible for the financial incentives for historic properties program if designated. Daniel also noted the Planning Commission would review the request at its meeting the following day and that City Council has final decision authority; the staff report indicated council consideration is scheduled for Aug. 28.
A motion to approve staff recommendations carried; commissioners voted in favor and no commissioners recorded opposition on the meeting record. The public hearing for the case attracted no speakers. The commission's approval advances the designation to the Planning Commission and ultimately to City Council for final action.
