Hennepin County officials presented the Public Works line of business portion of the county's proposed 2026 budget at an Oct. 1 Administration Operations and Budget Committee hearing, detailing a portion of the county's $3,090,000,000 overall proposed spending plan and explanations for changes to operating funds.
Assistant County Administrator for Public Works Lisa Cerny told commissioners that "Public works provides strong and resilient infrastructure that serves as a critical foundation for a healthy and thriving community," and reviewed service metrics and budget drivers for 2026. The county projects an overall operating increase of about $6,900,000 in the Public Works operating budget, while the division is also absorbing higher construction, materials and personnel costs.
The nut of the proposal is that solid waste processing and household hazardous waste are the main drivers of the net change: Cerny said the county is planning for a $5,500,000 increase in costs tied to processing waste and household hazardous waste.
