Trustees approved revisions to the district transportation policy that change how the district handles non-athletics field trips and clarify when parents or other authorized adults may transport students to activities.
Assistant superintendent Jeanne Dwyer told the board the revised regulation applies to trips outside athletics, band and other sanctioned extracurriculars and aims to limit district-paid travel costs for tournaments or optional events. Transportation staff and administrators reviewed common destinations and determined a roughly 60-mile radius captured the typical in-district travel range; the policy sets that boundary for district-paid trips and requires additional approvals for farther travel.
The regulation clarifies that parents may arrange alternate transport in advance with signed permission. If a parent-designated driver will transport students who are not their own children, the district will require volunteer-background clearance for that driver and a parental permission form that documents the arrangement. The district stressed the coach and administrator must approve any alternate transport and that the district prefers teams travel together for safety and supervision.
Trustees discussed concerns about the bus-driver shortage, coaches’ administrative burden and liability. Dwyer and transportation staff said the form, coach sign-in and sign-out requirements and advance planning (often 24 hours or pre-season arrangements) are intended to reduce confusion and ensure student safety.
A motion to approve the revised transportation/field-trip policy passed unanimously.
