SCUCISD superintendent reports near-projected enrollment, safety upgrades and improved campus ratings at convocation

Superintendent Paige Monning told the Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City ISD Board of Trustees on Aug. 19 that the district opened the school year smoothly and is close to meeting projected enrollment.
Monning said districtwide headcount on the most recent Monday report was 14,704 against a projection of 14,839, and she expected the final number would likely end near last year's total. "We are set to exceed that projection," she said, while noting projections originally had been conservative.
Monning reviewed safety and operations work completed over the summer: facility and equipment safety checks completed with support from the Cibolo Insurance SROs, an exterior door safety audit, PD radio checks, upgrades to cameras and exterior speakers, window film installations at some campuses, and an increased number of vape detectors. The district is moving visitor management to the Raptor platform with plans for tablet self check-in kiosks. She also reiterated the district's interlocal agreements with the cities of Schertz and Cibolo for school resource officers and part-time security coverage.
The superintendent highlighted district academic outcomes released this summer: the district received an overall "B" accountability rating and was one of five area districts to do so; eight campuses improved their letter grades and 12 of 16 campuses improved numerically. Wilder Intermediate and Corbett Junior High earned campus distinctions. Monning noted improvements in closing achievement gaps while identifying student achievement and relative performance as ongoing opportunities.
Monning also described staff and community engagement highlights: successful convocations at Steele and Clemens high schools, back-to-school family events, a $25,000 allocation in grants from the SCUC Education Foundation announced at convocation, and positive media coverage of first-day activities.
On staffing, district staff reported the district was better staffed than in recent years and noted particular attention to special education and substitute partnerships in order to fill vacancies.
She closed by reminding trustees that the district adopted its 2025'26 budget after seven budget workshops and that safety and readiness work would continue through collaborative committees and regional law-enforcement partnerships.
