Library director reports strong fundraising, warns of future state/federal grant uncertainty

Bateman reviewed other line items presented to the board: nonresident fees were $15,630 last year and the proposed figure for the coming year is $12,000; current-year library fines were $5,430 versus $6,800 the year before; and IT services declined from roughly $12,000–13,000 the prior year to about $7,000 this year. On staffing costs, Bateman said wages rose from "$2.86, almost $2.87" last year to "$3.51" this year (the transcript did not specify explicit units for those figures).
Bateman told the board the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), the federal agency that distributes many library grants through the states, is being shut down in the record. "The state grants we're getting are done after this year, so we'll get them this year," he said, adding that future funding would depend on whether state legislators or other state mechanisms decide to allocate replacement funds.
On fundraising, Bateman said the donor flyer for a donor wall had raised about $26,000 and that the balloon raffle had netted $445 after expenses; a recent breakfast raised about $1,300 and other events (bingo, barbecue) also produced donations. The board discussed a suggestion that board members chip in roughly $75 each for a small plaque on the donor wall; no formal vote was taken.
Bateman and board members also summarized recent and new programs: a regional Dungeons & Dragons night bringing multiple libraries together; a Spanish story time co-run with a partner from Utah State University; expanded STEAM clubs; a localscapes workshop teaching water-wise landscaping and grant information for property owners; and a Magic: The Gathering program supplied with an initial shipment of about 4,000 promotional cards.
