Cherokee County allows wall sign for church after GDOT removal of monument sign

The Cherokee County board unanimously approved a variance allowing a wall sign of up to 30 square feet for Indianola Baptist Church at 3109 Hickory Flat Highway after the church's freestanding monument sign was removed during recent Georgia Department of Transportation roadwork.
Staff explained that R-40 properties of three acres or greater are permitted a single freestanding sign (up to 32 square feet) but not a wall sign under Table 11.1 and Section 11.6. The church said GDOT removed the previous monument sign for road improvements that included right-of-way and utility relocations, and that a wall sign on the building is the most feasible option given the lowered sightlines and utility infrastructure in the new right-of-way.
Rob Logan spoke for Indianola Baptist Church and requested the variance to replace the lost monument sign with a wall sign sized about 30 square feet. No one spoke in opposition.
The board approved the variance 4-0.
