Construction updates: Moss kindergarten, Campbell addition and high‑school systems near completion; some utilities still pending

Board member and construction committee representative Mister Glassberg provided an update at the Aug. 12 Metuchen Board of Education meeting on the district’s ongoing construction projects, giving approximate completion targets and noting outstanding utility work.

Why it matters: construction timelines affect building access, air-conditioning availability, playgrounds, temporary board office locations, and scheduling for the opening of school buildings.

Glassberg said the Moss School kindergarten space is expected to be ready by Aug. 22, with air conditioning and bus-loop access available at that time; remaining Moss site work is expected to be finished by early November. He said an interior courtyard playground at Moss will not be complete immediately but the exterior playground will be in place for the start of school.

At Edgar, Glassberg reported that some site work may still be underway at the start of the year but the new main entrance will be available. At Campbell, the new addition and the playground are expected to be completed by August. The high school faces similar sequencing: Glassberg said PSE&G work that the utility needed to complete has finally been done, but the district still needs additional electrical work inside the addition before air conditioning and field lighting can be switched on; field lights (Musco) are expected to be usable in late fall once internal electrical work is finished.

Glassberg noted the cafeteria addition at the high school is completed but will be used temporarily for board offices until the board office renovation finishes mid-school year; once the office move occurs the cafeteria and new gym will open for students. He encouraged public attendance at a construction-committee meeting scheduled for the coming Monday at 7 p.m. in the Metuchen High School media center and said aerial photos and a short video will be shown at an upcoming farmers’ market outreach event.

Board members were asked to be patient in the event of early operational hiccups with new HVAC and electrical systems at the start of the school year; Glassberg and Dr. Caputo said they would circulate a written timeline to the board.

The update contained multiple approximate dates and several caveats about outstanding inspections and electrical tie-ins; Glassberg said the district will provide more detailed written timelines via the superintendent’s follow-up memo.
