Brentwood Library revises meeting-room policy, plans office redesign and reports summer-reading gains

The Brentwood library has revised its meeting-room policy to allow certain organizations to reserve both meeting rooms when no library event conflicts, plans an internal office redesign funded in the project's budget and reported increased adult summer-reading participation and circulation statistics.
Commissioner Janet Donahue told the board the library's policy committee revised the meeting-room policy after an overflow event when one room remained closed under the prior policy. Under the revised approach, certain organizations — especially city-affiliated groups — may reserve both Meeting Rooms A and B if no overlapping library event exists; other requests will be handled case-by-case.
Donahue said the library director is reorganizing administrative offices to place staff who interact with patrons in front-office spaces and move administrative leadership toward the back of the building. She said the work will be coordinated by city facilities staff, the money for the work is in the library project budget and plans are approved.
Donahue also provided usage and program statistics: adults increased summer-reading minutes by about 76,000 minutes to 213,000 total minutes; teens logged about 58,000 minutes and held 39 teen programs in July with 874 attendees. The library had 60,530 items checked out in July, Donahue said.
The commissioner said the space-planning committee raised concerns about a disconnect between initial consultant visuals and the board's vision; the committee has returned clarified guidance to the consultant (Barge Group) and acknowledged the timeline may shift to improve the final design.
