Fire Chief Michael Nehar told the city council that a recent Insurance Services Office (ISO) re‑survey has improved Aransas Pass—rom a public protection classification (PPC) 4 to an unofficial PPC 3.
"It was about a month ago, I wanna say, that we got the initial results, and we were graded on a scale of 1 to 10...and we were rated at a 4, which was our existing rating as it stood," Chief Nehar said. He said the department nd public works reflowed selected hydrants and improved measured flows, raising the ISO score from an initial 69.85 to roughly 71.5.
"We ended up getting better hydrant flows out of them, and it pushed us over the threshold to a 71.5, which made our public protection classification a better score of a 3," Nehar said, adding that the result is still unofficial until the state fire marshal issues formal confirmation.
Nehar cautioned that the department still lacks personnel and station capacity and has room to improve in training and other areas; he said becoming a PPC 2 or 1 would require additional resources.
Why it matters: ISO ratings are one factor insurance companies use in setting residential and commercial property premiums; a better PPC may lower costs for property owners and increase the city ppeal to investors.
