Custodial agreement vote fails; maintenance staff tentatively approve two‑year pact

Papillion La Vista Community Schools officials reported mixed results this month from labor negotiations with two facilities employee groups.
Custodial/warehouse bargaining: District negotiators reached a tentative agreement with custodial representatives but were told on Saturday that the unit vote failed by one ballot. The custodial contract currently expires Aug. 31; district staff said the existing contract language remains in effect while talks continue and that additional bargaining sessions are scheduled. The board did not vote on a final contract at the Aug. 4 meeting.
Maintenance bargaining: Separately, maintenance staff representatives (Local 226) reached a tentative two‑year agreement and the unit approved it unanimously. Key elements announced at the meeting included a wage increase in year 1 of roughly 3.94% and a year‑2 increase of about 3.8% (district staff read the figures during the presentation); an increase in uniform allowance (presented as a change from $275 to $300); continuation of existing health and dental plan options with the district continuing to pay full-family coverage for those eligible; and changes aligning personal and bereavement leave to teacher agreement terms (personal leave moved to 10 days; bereavement adjusted for loss of spouse/domestic partner/child). Staff also reported a change allowing sale-back of up to 10 days (previously 7) of accumulated leave while maintaining minimum balances.
District human-resources staff said the maintenance tentative agreement will be brought back to the board for formal approval at the Aug. 11 meeting. The custodial group will continue negotiations; staff said they will update the board when unit leadership reports results of follow-up talks.
