The board's policy committee reviewed several policy updates and statutory clarifications, including a recommendation to adopt the Minnesota School Boards Association (MSBA) model for policy 533 and to replace an older district policy (1009). The committee also presented updates to policy 606 (textbooks and instructional materials) with a linked procedures document.
Committee members said the revisions add a consistent definition of "instructional materials," streamline terminology (separating "curriculum" from "instructional materials") and add links to the procedural documents that explain selection and review. A committee representative said linking procedures answered many community questions. "We tried to streamline curriculum and instructional materials as kind of our two separate buckets and define them as such," Lexi said.
Policy 603 (curriculum development) and policy 606 will be reviewed together going forward, committee members said. The committee suggested improved public accessibility for procedures and a clear chain of contact for families: start with the classroom teacher and then the building principal for access to materials not listed in syllabi or parent portals.
Transportation policy 707 changes were presented as statute-driven updates. Committee members said statute sets a two-mile radius for eligibility in secondary and elementary routes and that recent fee changes reflected bus-seat availability and a decision this year to charge the actual cost for additional seat requests; a board member observed those fees prompted community attention. "We charge the true cost for that seat this year," a board member said, noting the district had not altered the statutory distance rules but had adjusted fee collection as part of budget realignment.
No formal policy adoptions occurred at this meeting; the discussion was informational and the committee said final drafts will return to the board with linked procedures and clarifying language.
