Parks and Recreation Commission elects officers and approves Harvest Festival permit

The East Grand Rapids Parks and Recreation Commission held several formal actions at its Aug. 25 meeting, electing leadership and approving event permits.

Elections: Commissioners nominated and unanimously approved Patrick as chair and Michelle as vice chair. During the meeting Patrick accepted the nomination for chair; commissioners then voted verbally in favor. "All in favor? Aye," the commission recorded for the votes.

Events and minutes: The commission approved the minutes for the June meeting and voted to approve the 2025 EGR Harvest Festival permit for a street-level Harvest and Beer Festival using portions of Wealthy Street in Gaslight Village. Staff noted a clerical error in the Harvest Festival application times (the application listed 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., while the event is scheduled to run from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m., with vendor setup starting at 10 a.m.). The festival organizer intends a similar layout to last year with central street tents and room for pedestrian access to storefronts.

During discussion of special event policy staff reiterated that the commission reviews permits that involve park space or road closures and summarized current guidelines: an eight-event annual cap on road-closure events and a two-event limit per month, though events fully contained within Gaslight Village may not count toward the annual cap. Commissioners also discussed operational details such as ticket booth placement and public safety corridors for emergency access.

The motions passed by voice vote; no roll-call tallies were taken at the meeting for these items.
