The Farmington School Board voted unanimously to approve a two-year collective bargaining agreement with the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 70 representing custodial staff, covering July 1, 2025, through June 30, 2027.
Key terms described by district negotiators: the contract runs 07/01/2025'06/30/2027; classifications were reorganized (from four to six levels) to create clearer pay pathways; targeted increases were applied to specific classifications; stipends were increased for required certifications (boiler licenses, pool certification and chemical applicator licenses); and the district moved toward benefit-premium targets intended to cover about 90% of single coverage, 80% of two-party and 70% of family coverage. The agreement also raises a preventative-health exam deposit into the employee HSA from $200 to $400, includes a district contribution to employee retirement (403b) and authorizes the district to pilot optional four-day schedules (4 tens) in summer months.
Director Ulrich, the district negotiator, described the talks as collaborative and said the changes were intended to make hiring and internal advancement within custodial and grounds roles more transparent and competitive. "We went from 4 classifications to now 6," Ulrich said, summarizing the classification changes.
The motion to approve carried after a motion by Willie and a second by Jazerski. The board recorded a voice vote; the chair called for "All in favor, say aye," and the ayes were recorded.
What comes next: staff said the changes will go into effect on the contract start date and that implementation details (e.g., how the optional summer 4-tens will be offered) will be administered by Human Resources and the bargaining group under a memorandum of understanding.
Vote: motion to approve collective bargaining agreement between IUOE Local 70 and the district for 07/01/2025'06/30/2027 — motion by Willie, second by Jazerski; outcome: approved (voice vote).
