Superintendent Brock explained the changes include rules tied to House Bill 142 concerning first-offender nicotine provisions; a clarified cell-phone policy that defines the instructional day (from drop-off to pick-up) and limits visible phone use during instructional time; and updates to medication requirements that align with new state rules. Brock said the handbook and discipline-code language were adjusted to provide clarity and to ensure compliance with state reimbursement and documentation requirements.
Board members asked how the phone policy would be enforced. "The policy is we should not see them during the instruction," a district representative said, adding that staff would not search students but would expect phones to be out of view during instructional time. The district also plans to distribute a memo and social-media notices explaining the changes to families.
The discipline code and associated handbook updates passed in a unanimous vote.
