The Audit and Finance Committee of the Austin City Council moved on Aug. 20 to the nominating process to select the next city auditor and held an executive session to discuss personnel matters related to the appointment.
At the meeting in City Council Chambers the committee approved the minutes of three special-called Audit and Finance Committee meetings (July 22, July 30 and Aug. 5, 2025). "Motion is made by Council Member Breduchen, seconded by the Mayor Pro Tem," the chair said; without objection, the chair said the minutes were approved.
The chair then introduced item 3 and reminded members that the city code designates the Audit and Finance Committee as the nominating committee for the full council. The chair said the committee must recommend finalists to the council and noted statutory timelines: the nominating committee must make a recommendation no later than 90 days after a position is vacated, and the council must select a city auditor from those recommendations within 30 days of the committee’s recommendation.
The committee discussed and set a proposed schedule: a special-called committee meeting and candidate interviews on Sept. 23 at 1:00 p.m.; the City Council to receive the committee’s recommendation on Oct. 7; the council to identify a top candidate on Oct. 21; and a planned council appointment on Nov. 6. The chair said the new auditor’s start date would be either Dec. 29 or Jan. 12, depending on final employment arrangements. The chair said the committee would conduct a closed executive session to continue the candidate-selection process under Texas Government Code §551.074. "Without objection, the audit and finance committee slash nominating committee for a new city auditor will go into an executive session to discuss personnel issues related to the appointment of a new city auditor, pursuant to section 551.074 of the Government Code," the chair said at 9:39 a.m.
The committee reported it completed its executive session later in the morning and reconvened at 10:22 a.m. The chair announced the committee had completed its agenda and adjourned. The committee did not announce any formal public action taken during the executive session.
