Student board member outlines fall activities; district reports enrollment and new student recognition plans

Student board member Julia Cruz told the Johnson County Board of Education on Aug. 14 that student groups are active as the school year begins: cheer camp drew 75 students, band camp had 38, and multiple athletics schedules were posted for August and September.
Cruz encouraged community attendance at sporting events and highlighted the FFA’s annual mums sale starting Sept. 1 at 8 a.m.; students planted more than 1,500 mums over the summer and plants will sell for $5 each with proceeds to support Johnson County FFA. She also reminded seniors that senior sunrise is scheduled for Aug. 15 at 6 a.m. and senior-success night and a Longhorn block party will be held Aug. 22, with free game entry for attendees of the block party.
Separately, a district director reported enrollment numbers: the district has 1,854 brick-and-mortar Johnson County students and 2,853 students listed under Connections Academy; the combined total yields 4,707 students when both groups appear together in state records. The presenter noted that Connections Academy enrollments are not all Johnson County students and said the district is tracking which students are physically in the county.
Staff also announced that the district will begin recognizing a student from each school at future board meetings, starting in September, and praised the district’s public-relations coordinator, Emma Robinson, for recent social-media outreach. The board discussed a district trademark for the Longhorn logo and was told the trademark and University of Texas review are complete; the district has until 2029 to address the gym-floor logo removal, which would require sanding the floor and is costly.
Board members were also informed that a fall district meeting is scheduled in Hamlin County at Morristown West and that two external board members will visit next month to complete a “board of distinction” evaluation.
