VEA rep says state summer bonus funds were not passed through to Mecklenburg County school staff

Alice Willingham, the Virginia Education Association representative for Mecklenburg County, told the Mecklenburg County School Board on the public-comment portion of its meeting that the district did not distribute state-allocated summer bonus funds to employees and urged the board to reverse that decision.

Willingham said the board approved a health-care-credit plan on Feb. 17 that had been funded with federal ESSER reimbursements and local surplus funds, and that when the state funds arrived May 30 the district used them to offset previously made health-care payments rather than distribute them as the state intended. "Using the February 17 healthcare credits that were already fully funded with federal and local dollars as a way to keep the May 30 funds for state-mandated bonuses is unjust," she said.

Willingham also said the Virginia Department of Education expects state bonus funds to be distributed "within a reasonable time after receipt of the funds from the Virginia Department of Ed," and urged the board to use the state allocation to pay staff bonuses "this month." She closed by asking the board to act to repair staff morale.
