Minnetonka — City parks staff reported several operational updates at the Park Board meeting on Aug. 6, including completed court work, event attendance figures and an events calendar for the fall.
Court repairs and striping
Darren (parks staff) said Covington Park’s tennis courts were paved in late May, received coatings and reopened for play on July 25. He said the city also added pickleball striping at the Overland (Oberlin) court and is using tennis nets to accommodate play at that site.
Summerfest and attendance
Staff reported that Summerfest drew a large crowd this year — staff said it was the largest in seven years with more than 6,000 participants — and raised roughly $1,000 in bracelets sales that will be used for scholarships (staff did not specify scholarship distribution). The fireworks display took place as scheduled and event organizers used multiple lots including the Ice Arena, City Hall, local schools and The Marsh to accommodate parking demand.
Air quality, weather and event planning
Several board members asked whether the city monitors air-quality indices for event and program cancellations during wildfire smoke or poor-air episodes. Staff said they would follow up with Recreation and public-safety partners about current protocols; City staff acknowledged some departments already monitor weather conditions and the Fire Department works with event staff on short-term weather decisions, and staff agreed to report back on whether air-quality thresholds are formally used to cancel or modify events.
Other updates and calendar items
Darren described recent projects accomplished and noted the city is managing construction impacts at some park access points. Upcoming Park Board items: a joint Park Board–City Council meeting and tour in September (meeting 5:30 p.m., then a site tour with a brief bus tour to several parks, including Big Willow and Glen Lake), and an Oct. 22 Park Board meeting that will feature the city’s sustainability coordinator, Ally Sutherland. Staff said the Park Board strategic plan and a 2026 work plan will be revisited in November and returned for adoption in December.
Ending
Staff asked board members to send any conflicts or schedule questions ahead of the September joint meeting and said staff will circulate the Park Board strategic-plan materials and other onboarding materials to new members.
