Romulus council holds public hearing on vacation of Cypress Road; no action taken

The City of Romulus City Council on Monday held a public hearing on a petition to partially vacate a stub of Cypress Road in the Metroplex Industrial Park Subdivision No. 1, north of Ecourse Road and west of Metroplex Drive, but took no formal action on the vacation.

Attorney William Hosler, representing the petitioner SAK Construction, told the council the request is “fairly straightforward” and that the company does not plan to change the road’s existing condition. “We have no plans at all to modify the road as it looks now. It’s going to be preserved exactly as it is,” Hosler said, adding the roadway is needed for large trucks serving the property.

The petition to partially vacate Cypress Road was filed Feb. 17, 2025; signature petitions were filed with the clerk’s office June 12, 2025, and the request was circulated to city departments for review, the clerk said. Hosler told the council he had received feedback from public safety and the Department of Public Works and was not aware of any departmental objections; he said the departments asked only that ingress and egress be maintained for public-safety access.

Council members asked questions about the configuration and use of the road. Councilwoman Roscoe asked whether Cypress connects through to Brant; Hosler replied it does not and described the road as a stub that serves the petitioner’s building at the west end. Hosler said SAK Construction owns the adjacent lots and intends, if the vacation is approved in later proceedings, to combine Lots 10 and 11 with the existing building to create an employee parking area.

The hearing record shows no members of the public spoke during the allotted public-comment portion; the clerk confirmed “no comments from the audience.” The council conducted routine votes to adopt the hearing agenda and later to adjourn, but did not vote on the road vacation at this meeting. The clerk noted the matter also appears on the council agenda under the clerk’s report for the council to take action at a later point.

The hearing record includes departmental review and a petitioner commitment to preserve current access for emergency and service vehicles; beyond those statements, no timetable, zoning amendments, or binding conditions on a final vacation decision were adopted during the session. Any formal vacation of the right-of-way would require subsequent council action following the procedures reflected in the clerk’s report.

Meeting procedure: the council completed roll call, accepted the public-hearing agenda by motion, heard the petitioner’s presentation and council questions, opened a public-comment period (no speakers), and adjourned. The city clerk will carry the petition forward under the clerk’s report for future council consideration.
