Pharr recaps Small Business Summit, National Night Out, Night Under the Stars and Sneaker Fest

Judy Gonzalez of the city’s Office of City Communications summarized recent events, saying the governor’s Small Business Summit on Aug. 7 at the Pepe Salinas Recreation Center brought resources and partners together for regional small-business support, with more than 120 people in attendance. Gonzalez said the city’s relationship with local economic-development partners and chambers helped the summit succeed.
Gonzalez reported that the Pharr Police Department’s National Night Out — described as the city’s largest back-to-school event on Aug. 5 — drew more than 4,000 attendees and featured agency booths and community engagement.
The city also highlighted Night Under the Stars, a traveling concert series; the meeting record noted a kids edition outside City Hall’s amphitheater with performances by School of Rock and Bjelconsburg and activities including face painting. Sneaker Fest at Pepe Salinas Recreation Center drew more than 30 vendors selling, buying and trading vintage and collectible sneakers and apparel.
Vendors and participants described the events as family friendly and community oriented. One vendor said shoppers’ “eyes light up” at the selection and that the event provided a “nice, safe environment” to buy, sell and trade. Another vendor described offering a rug-tufting demonstration as an interactive attraction.
Upcoming events listed by staff included Operation Chill (a community-policing family event), scheduled for Friday at 3–5 p.m. at a specified location, and the fifth annual Stick By Me suicide-prevention event planned at Pharr Vanguard Academy and Birding Center from 7–9 p.m.; staff said further details will be posted on city social media.
