Geary County recognizes appraisal staff for compliance with state valuation rules

The Geary County Board of Commissioners on Monday publicly commended the county appraisal staff for following state valuation rules and introduced several appraisal office employees.
A commissioner said the appraisal office has been largely compliant with state requirements: “you guys did, you know, you have been a 100% compliant 5 out of 8 years and the other 2 or 3 have been, in the high nineties,” the commissioner said, adding that the office follows “what the state statute requires you to do.” The commissioner said that compliance and staff continuity help reassure constituents that valuations are handled equitably.
County Appraiser Travis introduced staff members. Those introduced in the meeting included Bess Hadlauer, deputy county appraiser; Steele Street, residential appraiser; Kelly Morel, commercial appraiser; Courtney Knowles, residential appraiser; and Debbie McAllister, administrative assistant. The appraisers explained they value roughly 14,000 properties in the county and conduct routine corrections when ownership or property conditions change.
One commissioner noted the appraisal office’s public education work when property owners seek explanations, calling those interactions important to community trust. No ordinance, tax rate change or valuation adjustment was adopted during the recognition; the remarks were formal commendations and staff introductions.
