Millie Osguthorpe, executive director of Discover Klamath, briefed the board Sept. 3 on tourism metrics, staffing changes and an active events calendar that county tourism staff say boosted lodging revenue this summer.
Osguthorpe said Southern Oregon occupancy is up about 3% and that Klamath County’s average daily rate was about $123, down $1 from the previous year, while occupancy was up to 57% from 54.4% a year earlier. She said July revenue for Klamath County was about $6.7 million and that short-term rentals reported an average daily rate of roughly $240 with 78% occupancy. Discover Klamath also reported significant event activity: multiple major bike events, an Air Show and other visitor-driving activities. Osguthorpe cited Crater Lake’s record visitation and the air show as factors in higher visitation and revenue.
Osguthorpe said the tourism marketing director had given notice and that Discover Klamath had offered a local candidate for the position. She noted membership in Destinations International and recent training and certification efforts to improve crisis communications and economic-development alignment.
Commissioners thanked staff for the update and asked a few brief clarifying questions about partnerships, such as outreach with Indigo Creek Outfitters and support for events that may help shoulder-season visitation.
