The county said the hire — effective Aug. 28, 2025 — is funded by an additional $10,000 grant from the Oregon State Marine Board to KCESO. County staff described the hire as a short-term, 30-day position and said the person selected had already completed the hiring process before funding became available.
The request was presented to the board as a time-sensitive public-safety measure. County staff said Lieutenant Lewis had already arranged to have the individual cover shifts pending confirmation of the marine-board funding; when the grant arrived staff authorized coverage for the weekend and brought the emergency-hire request to the board afterward.
The board approved the emergency hire by voice vote; the chair signaled assent and the motion passed. No roll-call tally was recorded in the transcript.
County staff framed the action as having no net fiscal impact beyond the $10,000 grant.
The commissioners did not take additional action beyond approving the emergency hire at the meeting.
