At the meeting a district presenter noted the changes will be posted online for public review and the code will return for a required second reading and vote at the next board meeting. The presenter said, "we have added artificial intelligence or AI ... to be really explicit, especially around the misuse of AI, when it relates, particularly to harassment and bullying." The district did not take a final vote on the code at this meeting.
Superintendent's remarks also reviewed recent policy housekeeping tied to a new device policy. The district announced deletion of two obsolete policies: Policy 5687 (possession and use of personal cell phones in schools) and Policy 5688 (electronic devices with photographic or text-messaging capability). Those deletions are to be replaced by Policy 70316 (new device policy). The superintendent said the deletions are administrative housekeeping to align the policy manual with the new device policy; the transcript records the superintendent asking whether approval was needed and concluding "that's not consent."
Board members and student representatives discussed device use at school during the meeting. Student board members from Sutherland and Mendon reported practical communication challenges under the new device rules: club leaders and coaches find it harder to coordinate quickly during the school day, and students described friction when needing to send brief messages that require logging on to a device with multi-character passwords.
The meeting also included a first reading of Policy 70510, the district wellness policy, which will return for further action at a subsequent meeting.
